 | Community Service At Pomfret
Every Griffin has the opportunity to learn how to be a caring and involved member of the community. Many sports teams select a charity to support, while other students opt to participate in community service on a daily basis after classes to fulfill team activity requirements. There are numerous opportunities for students to lend a hand in ways that truly make a difference. The focus is on educating students on the difference between service and charity, with the goal to have a national and international focus, all without losing focus on the local needs in the surrounding community.
Our students have participated in the following ways:
- Tutoring at the local elementrary school
- Assiting after-school nature trails at the Audubon Society
- Krafternoon Kids, a craft class for faculty children
- Hosting an annual Red Cross Blood Drive
- Apple picking at a local orchard to donate the proceeds to a nearby food pantry.
- Recreation Hour at a senior center
- Spring Break Service trip to Cape Town South Africa (March 2010) and New Orleans (March 2011).
Pomfret School Service Council
The Community Service program is also the locus of the Service Council. This leadership group is comprised of five students and three faculty members who meet weekly to discuss and implement service initiatives to the entire Pomfret School Community. The group is responsible for bringing awareness of social issues and community service so that everyone can get involved.
