Questioning the Value of SAT Test Prep Courses 6/7/2010
by Bruce Wolanin, Director of College CounselingA recent discussion paper studied the true value of SAT test prep courses. “Research suggests that SAT test prep courses actually do little to boost scores. A NACAC study from 2008 found that test scores increased only 20 to 30 points after a test-prep program.”
“The best way to get ready for the SAT is to do well in school, take challenging courses, study hard, and read as much as possible,” wrote College Board spokeswoman Kathleen Fineout Steinberg, in an email. “There are no ‘tricks’ or ‘shortcuts’ to preparing for the SAT.”
I encourage reading both the National Association for College Admission (NACAC) Discussion Paper and a Christian Science Monitor article for more information on this interesting topic. |

Spring Team & Individual Photos 5/6/2010
by Bruce Paro, Director of AthleticsDear Parents,
If your son or daughter is participating in an interscholastic sport or dance or horseback riding this spring, individual and team photographs of Pomfret's student athletes are now available for purchase online. Each athlete has already had an opportunity to purchase her or his team photo, so do not order team photos unless you want a duplicate. Anyone wishing to view and/or order spring team and individual photos can go to their website address and click on the icon that says "Pomfret Spring." From there, follow the directions and you will be able to browse the photos by team, locate you son or daughter's photo, and order online. Questions can be directed to Andy or Suzi Moore at NEAT Photos by calling 800-207-0734 or email mail to: neatphotos@metrocast.net.
Best Regards,
Bruce Paro
